Chapter 3 of CM

Chapter 3 of Cluetrain Manifesto talked about the advantages the internet has on Free speech, and fast communication. It talks about e-mail and newsgroups, which are all very important. E-mail in general is something that should boggle the mind. Ten years ago internationally, what we call "snail mail" was the biggest form of communication. Then once the internet came about people realized that there are faster and simpler ways to send mail to people. This concept of e-mail blows the mind because why would you wait three days for someone to receive a letter from you when they can receive it in three minutes via e-mail. E-mail has opened peopl eup to newsletters on their interests, updates on airline information, and vacation packages. E-mail in general is an ingenious invention to promote communication between two people. Mercury International Mailing House holds an article about international "snail mail" versus e-mail. It is very interesting to read because in their eyes they feel as though international "snail mail" is still very much needed, in fact, it is needed more then ever. However, to us, the American People, we see this mail as being useful and valuable but not always necessary anymore.

Another amazing factor of communication through the internet is Chat Rooms. I remember being in fifth grade and going into a kid chatroom. The question was always ASL? You would enter your age sex and location and then you would get like five seperate IM's on your instant messenger from people who can relate. Thinking back, it is soo corny, but that's what chat rooms are for. Chat rooms bring people with the same or different interests together to talk, debate, and relate. Chat rooms are place where some people meet their significant others, where some people become harrased, and where some students get together and do group projects. It happens a lot nowadays where students will hit the chat button on there instant messenger and start a chat room strictly for the purpose of doing homework, and getting together for study sessions. I myself have done it at least twice this semester. It's easier then trying to find a place to meet. Are You Web Aware? is an article about the advantages and disdvantages chat rooms hold for individuals. It states that one of the biggest advantage is, "You can participate in an online community where you're not judged based on how you look." This is a major factor for many online couples. But chat rooms also allow you to express your feelings on a certain topic. For example, after the presidential debates, chatrooms host many discussions where people can chat with each other but how they feel the debate went and any agreements and disagreements they may have with the questions brought up throughout the debate.

Many of my classmates wrote good blogs on this chapter. In Jon Dean's blog, he wrote, "
Levine spoke on several new forms of communication that the Internet allows for. With these forms of mass communication, consumers don't need to rely solely on the information that the corporations supply. Corporations can and will survive. But they need to accept and make use of the fact that consumers no longer want to listen to "The Company." I agree entirely with Levine on this. People don't want cold formalities. People don't trust something that has no voice." Jon makes very good points through out his blog supporting this statement and many others. One other blog that I feel was excpetional was Elana R's Blog. In it she discusses in detail the advantages of mailing lists and e-mails. It is definatly worth checking out.
